ESD and cleanroom: advice on selection
ESD protection and cleanroom suitability are two different requirements. ESD products dissipate electrostatic charge in a controlled manner when person, workstation and product are grounded together. Cleanroom products limit particles and contamination that can arise or be introduced in regulated areas. A product can combine both properties, but only if the product documentation confirms this.
For selection, first define the application: assembly, testing, maintenance or cleaning. Then check material, design and the details in the datasheet. If you have questions about standards or the cleanroom class, we are happy to advise you.
What distinguishes ESD products from cleanroom products?
ESD products limit electrostatic discharges that can damage sensitive components. Cleanroom products limit particles and contamination. Suitability per product is given in the datasheet.
When are both properties needed?
If work is carried out in a regulated cleanroom with electrostatically sensitive components, both requirements can apply. Whether a product meets both must be shown by the datasheet.
What matters in ESD work clothing?
What matters is material with conductive fibres, fit and grounding via wrist strap or heel grounder. Clothing alone does not protect; it works only in a grounded system.
How are cleanroom wipes and swabs chosen?
Selection depends on the cleaning task, surface and particle requirement. Details on material, shaft length and ISO suitability are given on the product pages and in the datasheet.
Which details matter for ESD grounding accessories?
What matters are connection, snap size, length and the stated resistance of the cord. The total resistance of the grounding circuit is determined by all links together and should be tested.
